Vale Jacko Smith

It was with a great deal of sadness that we learned of the death of Aboriginal Elder "Jacko" Smith on 3 Feb 2011.
Jack was a great supporter of the 5 Lands Walk, and worked behind the scenes right from its inauguration to ensure that the event has the strong backing of the Aboriginal community and truly reflected Aboriginal culture and aspirations.
He understood our mission of "connecting people to people and people to place" as being consistent with his own views of reconciliation between the Aboriginal community and European Australians.
Despite his increasing frailty, he ensured he took part every year. He participated in much of the ceremony of the 5 Lands Walk, particularly "Welcome to Country" and with a twinkle in his eyes, took full credit for calling the whales which performed off MacMasters Beach during last year's Opening Ceremony.
We extend our condolences to his wife Pam and to all the Aboriginal community. They have lost a great man.
